In our everyday lives, we often make contributions to charitable causes. Sometimes we donate our time and effort, and at other times we give money.

Organising Twestival Melbourne has been an eye opener. From unexpected quarters, businesses big and incredibly small have stepped forward to help make our event successful.

No single blog post or tweets ad nauseam acknowledging their generosity can convey the heartfelt appreciation from Team Twestival Melbourne. But here we go anyway, saying “Thank you” each and every person who didn’t lecture us on their year-round charitable activity, but rather, in spite of it opened up their hearts to help put another child in school by donating to Concern Worldwide.

Thank you.

St Jude’s Cellar

$100 voucher

St Jude’s Cellars combines a produce driven restaurant and wine bar with specialist wine retail in a lofty Victorian room.

The wine shop retails carefully selected and some difficult to find wine from Australia and around the world. Knowledgeable staff are on hand and can fill you in on regular tastings and wine events.

The restaurant space has a long white tiled bar and a mixture of seating options, perfect for both intimate dining or larger groups. The food, like the wine selection is focused on quality ingredients and artful production. We support sustainable farming and fishing and strive to use organic, biodynamic and free range produce where possible.

During lunch and dinner, the wine shop doubles as a walk in wine list. To ‘drink in’, $15 is added to the shelf price which represents great value. An eclectic list of wine by the glass is also available.

In partnership with Twestival, Wagamama is auctioning a chef’s lesson to spend a day in the Wagamama kitchen. You’ll learn recipes for some of their special sauces and how to make a few of their signature dishes, a copy of the Wagamama cookbook and a lunch or dinner voucher for four people.

Worldwide sensation, Wagamama, opened its first restaurant in London’s Bloomsbury in 1992 featuring pan-asian cuisine. It is modelled on Japan’s popular ramen bars so the menu features a variety of mouth-watering noodle dishes along with rice dishes and your favourite side items such as dumplings and croqeuettes.

Wagamama’s motto is positive eating + positive living, so you can be sure you’ll be enjoying a fresh, nutritious meal in a great setting.

Tickets for the Melbourne Twestival event go on sale on Monday, 22 March.  Stay tuned for details on how to participate in this exclusive, exciting experience.

Make March 25th count this year: Twestival to help eradicate poverty

In late 2007 my wife and I visited a shelter for street children about a two-hour drive from central Mumbai, India. The shelter had been featured on a documentary on TV, and with a bit of Googling we were able to make contact with a volunteer from the shelter who agreed to take us there.

And so, on a muggy Mumbai day, we drove through a city whose sights and sounds – with its Bentleys and beggars in alarming proximity - tend to simultaneously hypnotise and haunt you.

Our contact was waiting for us a short drive from the shelter.  We’d need her assistance as we navigated through side streets that led to alleyways that led to a beaten track that eventually led to an open field. And there it was - a work-in-progress building.  But the building was empty.

All the children were at school.

We were informed of the circumstances of these children, many of whom were abandoned by their parents, who were typically drug addicts or beggars. The shelter took them all in, clothed them, provided fresh meals daily and provided a roof over their heads. But more than anything else, the shelter had convinced a local school to take them in as they would any of the other less disadvantaged fee-paying children from the local neighbourhood.  Our volunteer explained to us the significance of this last achievement.  An education was the ONLY hope for these children.  By helping them to learn to read and write, the shelter was creating the hope that each child may rise to the challenge of rewriting their own destiny.

On March 25th, Twestival - an event mobilising volunteers the world over – will seek to raise funds for education programmes in disadvantaged communities around the world. This year’s beneficiary charity is Concern Worldwide, an organisation working hard to eradicate poverty through Education.

Visit this blog, and follow us on Twitter (@TwestivalMEL) to find out how every denizen of Melbourne can contribute in cash or kind towards this global event.
